Pray for the peace of Jerusalem! “May they be secure who love you! Peace be within your walls and security within your towers!” For my brothers and companions’ sake I will say, “Peace be within you!” For the sake of the house of the Lord our God, I will seek your good. Psalm 122:6-9

In Scripture, we are encouraged to pray for the peace of Jerusalem. This passage of Scripture from Psalm 122 may be one of the most quoted references for praying for Israel.

Israel, particularly its capital city Jerusalem, is often characterized by violence, terrorism, and chaos. In addition, the political and religious conflicts within and across the nation’s borders give evidence of a lack of peace that is greatly needed in the land.

Because of the endless conflicts and countless disagreements surrounding the many groups of people with differing ideologies, it can seem like a land with no hope for peace.

No wonder we are encouraged to pray for the peace of Jerusalem. However, there is no reason to limit that prayer of peace to only the capital city; we should also pray fervently for the peace of all the land of Israel.

The passage of Scripture in Psalm 122 not only tells us to pray for the peace of Jerusalem but also declares a prayer of security, that security will be within Jerusalem’s towers.

Various potential attacks often threaten Israel’s security. However, even though Israel has a sophisticated military, we know that, ultimately, the Lord is the one who protects and provides security.

Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. Psalm 127:1

Without the help of the Lord, Israel’s military, the Israel Defense Forces, will not be able to withstand all the threats to the nation’s security.

We should pray that the Lord Himself will guard and protect Israel. We should pray that He will give them peace and provide them security. Without the Lord’s intervention, true peace and security will not be achieved in Israel.

Would you join me in praying for Israel’s peace and security?

Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus, I approach Your throne of grace with boldness today on behalf of Israel. I pray for the people and the land of Israel, and the capital city Jerusalem. I ask that You would cause your peace to reign over Israel.

According to Your Word in Psalm 122, I declare to Jerusalem: may they be secure who love you, Jerusalem! Peace be within your walls and security within your towers! I pray that peace be within you!

Father, I ask that You would watch over the city of Jerusalem and over the borders of Israel and cause her to be secure, because Your Word says that unless the Lord watches the city, the watchmen stay awake in vain.

I also pray that You will establish Jerusalem and make the city a praise in the earth, that You would accomplish Your will in the land that you promised to Abraham.

I ask all these things in the name of Jesus, Yeshua, who is the Prince of Peace.

Amen.
